Of the 32 starters who produced multiple startable seasons, 17 were startable as rookies. This means for drafted Ss who weren’t startable Year 1, their success rate drops to 17.4%. Only four Ss who weren’t startable as Rookies or Sophomores still put together multiple startable seasons. This means for Safeties that aren’t startable Year 1 or Year 2, their success rate drops to 5.3%.

These numbers are impressive considering they don’t differentiate between SSs and FSs. And the Ss end up getting drafted later than any position other than DT and CB. There is definitely some fantasy opportunity here.

*Sean Taylor, in case you were curious.

Sean TaylorThe first Safety taken in drafts is all over the place. The average is pick 33.2. Sean Taylor was taken with pick 1.13 in 2004. The following year, Josh Bullocks was the first safety picked 5.06.

Some 1st Round safeties last until the 5th Round of rookie drafts. This will be important this year. Jamal Adams, Malik Hooker, Obi Melfonwu and Budda Baker are all generating 1st round expectations. They will all go in the 2nd, 3rd or even 4th round of dynasty rookie drafts. Karl Joseph and Keanu Neal both went in the 3rd round last year in one of my leagues. The other impressive rookies should be available in the 4th-6th rounds in rookie drafts. Anyone drafted in the 2nd or 3rd in the NFL draft would be worth a look.
